How to identify handmade antique rugs
Handmade rugs often reveal themselves on the back. Look for visible knots, slight pattern irregularities, and fringe that is part of the rug’s foundation rather than sewn on afterward.
Check the back first
Turn the rug over and inspect the weave. A handmade rug usually shows the design on the back with small variations in the knots. Machine-made rugs often have very uniform stitching or a backing material that hides the structure.
Look at the fringe
On many hand-knotted rugs, the fringe is the continuation of the warp threads. If the fringe is stitched on separately, the rug may still be decorative, but it is less likely to be a traditional hand-knotted antique.
Study the colors and wear
Older rugs can show mellow color changes, abrash, low pile, repairs, or oxidation. These clues help estimate age, but photos and expert review are important because wear alone does not prove value.
