Your Main Options

1. Specialist Rug Buyers (Direct Sale)

Specialist buyers who purchase antique rugs directly from private sellers offer a straightforward route. The process typically involves submitting photographs online, receiving a written valuation, and agreeing a price without intermediaries.

Advantages:

  • No seller's fees or commissions
  • Fast response (often 24–48 hours)
  • No need to transport the rug
  • Collection arranged at no cost once an offer is accepted
  • Payment on completion, not weeks later

Considerations:

  • You deal with a single buyer, so shopping around makes sense if you have time
  • Best suited to pieces that are clearly antique and identifiable — for unusual or very rare pieces, auction may occasionally achieve higher results

This is typically the fastest and simplest route for most private sellers, particularly for Persian, Oriental, Caucasian, and tribal antiques in recognisable styles.

2. Auction Houses

Major UK auction houses — Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams, and regional salerooms — occasionally achieve record prices for exceptional pieces. However, the economics often work against private sellers:

Fees: Sellers typically pay a vendor's commission of 10–20%. Buyers pay a buyer's premium of 20–30%. These buyer's premiums are factored into lower hammer prices — bidders are not going to pay a high price knowing they still owe 25% on top.

Waiting time: Specialist rug sales are infrequent. Your piece may sit in storage for weeks or months waiting for the next appropriate sale. If it fails to sell (a real risk), it returns to you unsold.

When auctions work best: For truly exceptional pieces — museum-quality antiques with documented provenance, record-breaking condition, or genuine rarity — a specialist auction can generate competitive bidding that exceeds private sale prices. This applies to perhaps 5% of antique rugs that come to market.

3. Antique Dealers

Antique dealers who specialise in rugs operate similarly to specialist buyers, but are often looking to purchase pieces for resale through their own showrooms. Prices offered tend to be conservative — a dealer needs to make a margin between what they pay you and what they sell for.

Finding a reputable specialist rug dealer rather than a general antique dealer is important. A general antique dealer may not recognise the specific features that make a rug valuable.

4. eBay and Online Marketplaces

Selling antique rugs on eBay or similar platforms is possible but presents challenges:

  • Shipping large, heavy rugs is expensive and risky
  • eBay charges seller fees (typically 10–13% of final sale price)
  • Buyers may not understand what they are looking at
  • Risk of return disputes
  • Fine antique rugs rarely reach their true value via general online marketplaces

For lower-value rugs (under £300) where specialist buyers may not make an offer, eBay can be a reasonable alternative. For genuine antiques, it is rarely the best route.

5. Facebook Marketplace and Local Selling

Local selling works best for low-to-mid value rugs where buyers can view in person and collect. Fine antiques reach a far larger and better-informed audience through specialist channels.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Choose a specialist buyer if:

  • You want a fast, straightforward sale
  • You don't want to pay fees or commissions
  • Your rug is a recognised antique type (Persian, Caucasian, Turkish, tribal)
  • You want collection arranged at no cost

Consider auction if:

  • Your piece is genuinely exceptional — museum quality, documented provenance, or rare
  • You have time to wait for the right sale
  • You have had multiple specialist valuations and believe auction will outperform them
